Fish immunity and sensitivity to medications.
Aquarium fish’s resistance to disease and fish’s sensitivity to medications is a very poorly understood topic. Fish species that are sensitive to diseases are often quite resistant to medications and fish species that are resistant to diseases can be very sensitive to medications.
At Fishtech Global’s laboratory we have often been surprised by which species can tolerate medications at higher-than-normal dosage and which species are sensitive to medications. The continually recurring conundrum was that fish which easily succumb to disease could tolerate higher medication dosages. A very popular fish is the black ghost knifefish which most common opinion is they are sensitive to chemicals which is true. Over 16 years of research we found that knifefish were very resistant to diseases which conflicts with our initial belief.
Catfish live in the lower strata in the wild as well as in the aquarium, which can be a harsher environment as the substrate can harbor most of the pathogens and nature has enabled them to be resistant to these pathogens and catfish are always more sensitive to medications. This is often listed on most medications’ dosage instructions.
The bio flora in fish mucus or slime coat varies in composition. The bio flora protects the fish from pathogens in their environment. Varying composition in the bio flora represents each species’ ability to ward off diseases.
Cichlids are another very popular species that are very resistant to pathogens, but should a disease outbreak occur, a slight overdose of medications may cause more mortalities than the actual disease. Medication manufacturers cannot advise on each fish species and their tolerance to medication dosage. The dosages
Often recommended dosages are very conservative to prevent harm to the more resistant fish. The more sensitive fish are to disease the higher the medication dosage needs to be administered, and a lower dosage is required for disease resistant fish. This can make dosing aquarium fish quite complicated to achieve an effective result without losing fish to insufficient dosage or overdosing.
Purchasing disease-free aquarium fish from your local pet store will ensure this will never become a problem. Fishtech global has developed a quarantine system that can be customized for every aquarium retail store. Our system is based on our research in our lab that was conducted on thousands of aquarium fish and hundreds of species.
Our algorithm we have developed has logged all fish species and broken them up into groups for dosing and quarantining fish in a simple daily printout.
Fishtech Global has done all the hard work devoting over 10 000 hours of research to our laboratory and has a computer algorithm to reduce a complex system to a simple daily email.
We can assist your local store with a proactive disease management system.
Fishtech global is your partner in the aquarium world assisting the hobbyist, importer and retail aquarium outlets.
